Last night was a night of firsts for me. It was my first visit to East Burn, another place I want to hit on a Tuesday night for $2 pint night. It was my first event with the Portland Microbrew Meetup. It was also the first time I played skeeball in at least 15 years. But it won’t be the last for any of these things.

The Portland Microbrew Meetup hosted the first annual skeeball tournament last night at East Burn. It was a great event for meeting new people, drinking beer, and participating in a little friendly competition. There were about 30 people there and the host, Chad did an excellent job of setting up the brackets and managing the tournament. Everyone got to play in the first and second rounds. The second round started the head to head eliminations. The championship round was pretty intense with the victor scoring over 400 points. The vibe was friendly with lots of cheering on all sides.

East Burn’s basement is a cool little space. It is dark, has games, a DJ booth (I am guessing that gets used on the weekends), and a pretty serious fish tank in the corner. There are 20 beers on tap and the taps rotate regularly. So you can always find something new to try. PBR tall boys are only $2 and most people at the tournament had switched to them by the end of the evening. The food menu is pricey and more upscale then I would have expected from hanging in the basement, but the upstairs bar area definitely seems to have a more posh feel to it.

Anyway, if you have a hankering to relive your skeeball glory days, head to East Burn. You may find me there practicing to make it through more than two rounds in next year’s tourney.

Tonight there Fire on the Mountain, right down the road from East Burn, is donating half the dinner proceeds to the MS Society. There will be live music and more than a few people. I’ll be there so I’ll post on it tomorrow.
